Parenting a Neurodivergent Child

Parenting a neurodivergent child can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it can also bring unique challenges that often feel overwhelming, isolating, or misunderstood by others. Whether your child is autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or living with another form of neurodivergence, the demands of everyday life can place a huge strain on your emotional wellbeing, relationships, and sense of self.

As a psychotherapist and counsellor in Southampton, I offer compassionate, body-based support for parents navigating the complexities of raising a neurodivergent child. This includes working through feelings of exhaustion, guilt, anxiety, and grief, as well as exploring relational challenges, advocacy stress, and the impact of navigating educational and healthcare systems.

Many parents find therapy especially helpful for

  • Managing stress, anxiety, and burnout related to parenting
  • Processing feelings of guilt, shame, or “not doing enough”
  • Finding healthy ways to cope with emotional overwhelm
  • Exploring grief or loss around unmet expectations or hopes
  • Strengthening resilience and self-regulation strategies
  • Learning to parent with compassion while also caring for yourself

What is Psychotherapy and Counselling?

The main focus of this work will be your body as the foundation for practice and co-regulation. There will be an opportunity to learn different somatic embodiment and regulation strategies We will be learning polyvagal theory basics, mapping your own nervous system states, building your resource library for using with clients, learning about co-regulation and recognising the subtle and not-so subtle cues of dysregulation in clients and how to be alongside this.

We will also be tracking the nervous system around visibility, offering or charging. There will be lots of opportunities to bring questions and put theory into practice. This will be a predominantly experiential course. Since each person’s body and nervous system are different and will have different needs, we will follow the needs of the group and will cover each theme as required.

How I work

My approach is trauma-informed, body-based, and inclusive, drawing on somatic practices, relational safety, and regulation tools to help you feel more grounded and resourced. I also understand the importance of lived experience - both as someone who works with neurodivergent adults and who recognises the challenges parents face when their child’s needs are not always understood by schools, services, or wider society.

I offer counselling and psychotherapy in Southampton (in person) as well as secure online therapy for parents across the UK. Together, we can create a safe and supportive space where you feel seen, validated, and empowered in your parenting journey.

If you are searching for support for parenting a neurodivergent child in Southampton, or if you are looking for a therapist who understands both the joys and struggles of raising a neurodivergent child, I am here to walk alongside you with compassion, experience, and care.
